Volunteers who participated in the study were brought into a lab and either given lab coats or not. Those who wore lab coats showed quite significantly better performance.

When you dress like an athlete, you are more focused on staying healthy. Clothing can differentiate between street wear and athletic wear, and you can wear it more often. This will put you in a better mood to hit the gym. It’s not the perfect analogy, but it does make sense.
