How to choose the right bike helmet?

Although there is no law in Germany that requires adults to wear a helmet, it is still recommended. Especially for action-packed cycling such as gravel or mountain biking, a bicycle helmet is even an unwritten necessity to keep you safe. But how do you choose the right model? We offer some tips to help you make the right choice.

It’s all about fit

A good cycling helmet should fit as snugly as possible – but without being too tight or wobbling uncomfortably. To find the right size, you need to measure your head circumference, as this is the basis for choosing the right size.

Important: Size charts may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer! It is also recommended to try out the helmet’s size settings. The width and length of many models can now be adjusted in a few simple steps.

safety first

Another important factor is the safety of the helmet. This includes points such as materials, certification and areas of use.

Helmets sold in Europe have CE certification, which proves that they comply with European safety standards. For this purpose the following test criteria must be met:

EN 1078: General certificate for bicycle helmets
EN 1080: Test standard specifically for children’s helmets

Although the universal test standard applies to all cycling helmets, there are still different types of helmets. For example, a mountain bike helmet requires completely different safety qualities than a normal helmet for short cycling trips.

When buying a helmet, you should also look for other protection systems such as MIPS< /span> (Multi-directional Impact Protection System). This system was developed to provide additional protection against concussion or other injuries in the event of an impact and is now standard on most helmets.
